(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced lane and ramp closures on I-295 northbound and Route 42 northbound tonight and continuing next week as the Direct Connection and Missing Moves projects advance in Bellmawr, Camden County.
Route 42 northbound Exit 1B ramp to I-295 northbound closure
Beginning at 10 p.m. tonight, Friday, January 20, until 5 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, January 21, and continuing on Monday, January 23 and Tuesday, January 24 at the same times, Route 42 northbound Exit 1B to I-295 northbound will be closed and detoured. In addition, a single right lane on Route 42 northbound will be closed just past Exit 14B/Creek Road. The closure tonight is necessary to repair guiderail and the attenuator at the exit, and the closure next week is necessary for work in the I-295 tunnel where traffic merges from I-76 eastbound. The following detour will be in place Friday, Monday, and Tuesday nights:
Route 42 northbound Exit 1B ramp to I-295 northbound detour:
- Motorists traveling on Route 42 northbound wishing to take Exit 1B to I-295 northbound will be directed to continue on Route 42 northbound to I-76 westbound
- Take I-76 westbound to Exit 2/I-676 northbound
- Take I-676 northbound to Exit 1/Collings Avenue
- Turn right onto Collings Avenue
- Turn left onto I-676 southbound which becomes I-76 eastbound
- Take I-76 eastbound to Exit 1B/I-295 northbound
I-295 northbound lane closures
In addition, on Monday, January 23 and Tuesday, January 24 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day, the two right lanes on I-295 northbound at Exit 26 where the highway splits for I-76 toward Philadelphia and I-295 toward Trenton are scheduled to be closed and detoured. The closure will continue through the tunnel and is necessary for guiderail work and barrier installation on I-295 northbound near the Browning Road Bridge and work in the tunnel. Traffic from I-76 eastbound Exit 1B going into the tunnel will not be affected. Three lanes of traffic will be maintained in the tunnel. Motorists should expect congestion on I-295 northbound and Route 42 northbound. The following detour will be in place Monday and Tuesday nights:
I-295 northbound detour:
- Motorists on I-295 northbound will be directed to stay left and take Exit 26 for I-76 westbound
- Take I-76 westbound to Exit 2/I-676 northbound
- Take I-676 northbound to Exit 1/Collings Avenue
- Turn right onto Collings Avenue
- Turn left onto I-676 southbound which becomes I-76 eastbound
- Take I-76 eastbound to Exit 1B to I-295 northbound
The work is part of the Direct Connection and Missing Moves projects that will provide a seamless route for I-295 motorists traveling through the interchange of I-295, I-76, and Route 42. To sign up for I-295 Direct Connect project updates go to 295DirectConnect.com or text CONNECT to 1-844-844-3681.
The $180 million federally-funded Missing Moves project will build new ramps connecting Route 42 northbound to I-295 southbound, and I-295 northbound to Route 42 southbound in order to allow for the direct movement of traffic between the two roadways. These are commonly known as the “missing moves.” The project will also include the demolition and reconstruction of the Creek Road Bridge over I-295 between Route 42 and Almonesson Road. The majority of the project will be built off of the roadways and will have minimal impact on traffic on Route 42 and I-295. The project is expected to be completed in late 2023.
Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
